FINANCE
Access to capital unlocks agency. Yet for millions of women, each shilling is hard-won, safeguarded, and stretched—without it, their vision, work, and influence are trapped beneath systems that ignore them.
WHY FINANCE?
- In Uganda and much of the Global South, women are more likely to save—but less likely to access formal credit.
- MFIs often charge 27–32% interest—higher than commercial banks, with no understanding of women’s local realities or needs.
- Without access to affordable capital, women can’t invest in water, food systems, or their businesses—keeping them in cycles of scarcity, not growth.

Determined not to be defeated by her circumstances, Emily embraced new opportunities through training in soap making, briquette production, and water services provided by She Builds Power Team. Today, soap is her main source of income, supported secondarily by selling food, charcoal briquettes, and water. Her income has tripled since she started, allowing her to buy her own land and create a stable home for her family.
But Emily’s impact goes beyond her personal success. As a trusted community WASH trainer, she up-powers other women by sharing skills that bring hope and independence. One woman she trained, Hamisa, went on to buy a juicing machine, acquire land, and achieve self-sustainability.
In Emily’s community, children now see women like her as role models, inspiring a new generation that values hard work and resilience. If given resources, Emily dreams of building a women’s workshop, a place for gathering, working, and sharing knowledge.
Known affectionately as “The Rich Grandmother,” Emily’s leadership is her superpower, born from the confidence and self-reliance she gained. Emily’s story is one of courage, transformation, and a vision for a stronger, empowered community. Long Live She Builds Power.
